What You'll Be Doing

If you are interested in business, technology, foreign languages, cultural awareness, overseas experiences or the global economy, Gannon’s international business program can help you develop skills to turn traveling and business into an exciting, adventuresome and challenging career. As an international business major, you will develop a familiarity with worldwide business practices and institutions, and be prepared to work in or manage international divisions of medium-sized companies as a certified trade specialist.

Industries that are growing rapidly in terms of international business activities include: electronics, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, leisure products and services. Other industries likely to continue to experience good global growth rates include: chemicals, transportation vehicles and parts, health-related industries, tourism and consumer products. Businesses not directly involved in selling a product at which there may be international opportunities include: freight forwarding companies, export management or trading companies, political risk assessment firms and consulting firms.

 

Internatinal Business Curriculum

The Gannon international business program’s curriculum is both exciting and interesting as it is a combination of the following: all the functional areas of business, including accounting, finance, management, marketing; the international dimension of each of the functional areas of business; social science disciplines, such as economics, geography, history, political science, foreign languages and culture. As a result of the flexibility and amount of free electives provided in the program, a student may develop a proficiency in a particular foreign language (including obtaining a minor), as well as expertise in a particular geographical area, such as China, Latin America or Europe.

 

College Connections

The international business program is housed in The Gannon University Dahlkemper School of Business Administration. Students in the international business program interact with students and instructors in the fields of accounting, advertising communications, business administration, finance, management, marketing, risk management and insurance, and sports management and marketing.

The Dahlkemper School of Business Administration at Gannon has received accreditation from the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), making Gannon the first business school in northwestern Pennsylvania with both undergraduate and graduate programs that are nationally accredited.

The Small Business Development Center, which is located on the Gannon campus, provides students with a unique opportunity to work on projects and assignments for area businesses through classes and internships.

All Gannon business students have the opportunity to participate in many professional business organizations, including: the Gannon Accounting Club, Student Investment Trust, Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity, Gannon Student Advertising Club, Delta Mu Delta Honorary Business Fraternity and Marketing Club.

Major Facts

    • Gannon’s international business program offers study abroad opportunities. A student may receive Gannon University credit for courses taken at a university located in another country. Grants are available to support study abroad experiences.

    • Gannon University students can participate in shorter overseas study tours to various destinations, which have included China, Italy, England, France, Greece, Ireland, the Canary Islands, Egypt, Turkey, Australia and New Zealand.

    • Students may complement their international business degree by studying French, German, Spanish or Chinese in Gannon’s foreign language program. Opportunities exist for obtaining a foreign language certificate, a minor or a double major in a foreign language (except Chinese).

    • One unique aspect of the Gannon international business program is the China Studies program. It consists of the “Splendid China Study Tour,” the China Studies course, and several Chinese language and culture courses.

    • Juniors may choose to pursue an accelerated MBA program and complete their undergraduate and graduate degrees in just five years, rather than six.

    • Senior students participate in an internship to acquire hands-on, real world experience.

    • Gannon alumni from the international business program work in locations such as Taipei, Taiwan, Buenos Aires and Argentina among others.

    • Academic and merit scholarships are available through the Business Excellence Awards.

    • Throughout students’ academic experience at Gannon, they can participate in a variety of service learning opportunities.
