Gerontology Certificate

Overview

Gannon's 12-credit certificate program in Gerontology can be obtained either in conjunction with or independent of degree programs. Undergraduate courses are available in the day or evening.

This certificate enhances expertise, skills and career opportunities in the field of aging. In addition, this program improves your knowledge of the aging process, allowing you to better plan for your own future, regardless of your academic major.

Career Opportunities

Understanding yourself and others is a key to success -- the Gerontology program offers you this key. Students majoring in undergraduate degree programs may expand their professional competencies and increase their opportunities for careers by adding one or the entire sequence of four courses in Gerontology to their program of studies.

Certification in Gerontology will make you more marketable in many fields, including government, private industry, social service, education, and health care, especially if you plan to work with mature adults.

Gerontology Certificate holders include bankers, counselors, health care and human service professionals, social workers, government employees, educators, and graduate students. The program attracts students in all majors who are interested in life as it will be in the future.

Program Requirements

Students choose 12 credit hours from the courses listed below:

Introduction to Gerontology
(required for certification)
3 credits
Special Topics in Gerontology 3-6 credits
Sociology of Aging 3 credits
Death, Dying, and Bereavement 3 credits
Mental Health/The Elderly 3 credits

Gerontology Minor

Students majoring in other disciplines may obtain a minor in Gerontology upon the completion of 18 credits in Gerontology. Students seeking a Gerontology minor will receive the Gerontology Certificate after successfully finishing the first 12 credits in Gerontology.

Note: A Gerontology Certificate is also available on the graduate level.
