Gannon University believes there are many pathways to innovation. Environmental engineers are innovators that specifically work to find solutions to the problems facing our global society. If you love science, are good at math, and want a job in which you can contribute to making the earth a better place, Gannon’s environmental engineering program can put you on a path to achieve your goals.
Environmental engineering graduates work for environmental consulting firms, industrial companies dealing with environmental compliance, health and safety, and governmental agencies (such as the Environmental Protection Agency, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Conservation and Natural Resources). A growing number of environmental engineering graduates also work in sales positions with firms that provide industry and government with pollution control, and monitoring equipment and services. Environmental engineering graduates oversee construction of pollution control systems, conduct environmental assessments, design pollution control systems, and evaluate environmental compliance and management.
The bachelor of science degree program at Gannon is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc.
Environmental engineering students gain professional and leadership experience through involvement in extracurricular organizations such as the Gannon Environmental Club and Women in Science and Engineering (WISE).
The environmental engineering faculty has earned advanced doctorates in areas including civil and environmental engineering, geo-environmental engineering, and industrial health and safety.
Faculty members regularly attend professional conferences where they present papers on their research and their areas of expertise.
• According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, environmental engineering graduates can look forward to 45 percent growth in job opportunities. Environmental engineering graduates earn $30,000 to $50,000 annually.
• Environmental engineering students often have opportunities to work with area firms in internship positions, either during the academic year or during the summer.
• Environmental engineering students become involved in research projects conducted by faculty and graduate students who are investigating innovative ways to understand and control pollution, and improve water quality in local streams, the Presque Isle Bay and Lake Erie. State of the art computer software is used to model watersheds and the aquatic ecology of local streams. Software is also used to model bioprocess systems for treatment of wastes and the production of biofuels from waste materials.
• All of Gannon’s environmental engineering graduates have found professional employment upon graduation.
• Every environmental engineering student conducts a senior design project that brings together the elements of assessing engineering requirements for a new or modified system, and evaluating alternative solutions in terms of performance, efficiency and economic benefit.
