Dr. Yoo assisting student Bioinformatics is a new scientific discipline that combines biotechnology and computer science into a broad-based field important to all biological sciences. It’s a great major for anyone interested in using technology to transform scientific knowledge and analyze data. As a bioinformatics major you will take courses in mathematics, computer science, chemistry, biology and biochemistry and learn how to integrate your newly developed skills in order to accomplish real world tasks.

 

About the Program

• Bioinformatics is housed in Gannon’s College of Engineering and Business, making interdisciplinary study convenient and exciting.

• Laboratory courses in systems related topics integrate lecture with technique in practice environments.

• Professional organizations available to bioinformatics students include the Biology Honor Society (Tri Beta), Chemistry Club, Chemistry Honor Society and the Society of Women Engineers.

    • Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary academic program, and is primarily a hybrid of biology and computer science combined with the strengths of Gannon’s Liberal Studies Core Curriculum.

    • Gannon University is the only school in northwestern Pennsylvania to offer a degree in bioinformatics.

    • Gannon’s bioinformatics program will prepare students for careers in the field as well as graduate programs.

    INTERNSHIPS – Bioinformatic students experience a wide range of internships both locally and nationally like the University of Pittsburgh’s Super-Computing Center and the National Institution of Health in Washington D.C.

    • The recent market research reports project an annual market growth of 15.8 percent or $3.5 billion by 2010 in bioinformatics research and development.
