Bioinformatics is a new scientific discipline that combines biotechnology and computer science into a broad-based field important to all biological sciences. It’s a great major for anyone interested in using technology to transform scientific knowledge and analyze data. As a bioinformatics major you will take courses in mathematics, computer science, chemistry, biology and biochemistry and learn how to integrate your newly developed skills in order to accomplish real world tasks.
• Bioinformatics is housed in Gannon’s College of Engineering and Business, making interdisciplinary study convenient and exciting.
• Laboratory courses in systems related topics integrate lecture with technique in practice environments.
• Professional organizations available to bioinformatics students include the Biology Honor Society (Tri Beta), Chemistry Club, Chemistry Honor Society and the Society of Women Engineers.
• Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary academic program, and is primarily a hybrid of biology and computer science combined with the strengths of Gannon’s Liberal Studies Core Curriculum.
• Gannon University is the only school in northwestern Pennsylvania to offer a degree in bioinformatics.
• Gannon’s bioinformatics program will prepare students for careers in the field as well as graduate programs.
• INTERNSHIPS – Bioinformatic students experience a wide range of internships both locally and nationally like the University of Pittsburgh’s Super-Computing Center and the National Institution of Health in Washington D.C.
• The recent market research reports project an annual market growth of 15.8 percent or $3.5 billion by 2010 in bioinformatics research and development.
• SALARY – Depending on their level of education, bioinformaticians can earn an annual salary of $50,000 to $160,000.
