Gannon and Erie Community Volunteers Continue Construction on St. Joseph House of Faith in Action
Posted: April 11, 2018
Gannon University faculty, staff and students and Erie community members are gathering at the St. Joseph House of Faith in Action as volunteers, and builders themselves.
Groups of volunteers are on site at St. Joseph House, located on the 400 block of W. Fourth Street, to assist in the construction of Gannon’s first volunteer house build that will further enhance its community and service initiatives in the Our West Bayfront (OWB) neighborhood.
St. Joseph House of Faith in Action will serve as a home base for volunteering and connecting with the Erie community as an outreach ministry center of Gannon University’s Center for Social Concerns. That work is progressing as volunteers have assisted with various indoor and exterior construction tasks, including interior framing, insulation and drywall, and are continuing construction with painting, flooring and more.
Building Systems Inc. and Gannon maintenance staff are managing the volunteer build so that volunteers may join in the construction effort. Support from friends and partners of Gannon University and the OWB neighborhoods who are of like mind, heart and interest in achieving the purpose of this project are welcome and encouraged to volunteer.
The mission of St. Joseph House of Faith in Action is to humbly serve neighbors in the spirit and example of St. Joseph the Worker through purposeful programs and actions based upon four pillars of service, simplicity, community and reflection.
It is located in the heart of the OWB community in order to provide a simple and functional space for groups to meet and create programs focused on urban sustainability and neighborhood revitalization, including housing restoration, urban Alternative Break Service Trips, summer programs and other service initiatives of the Center for Social Concerns, Campus Ministry and additional University organizations.
Volunteers can participate in the build by signing-up online at getconnectederie.org and “Become a Fan” of Gannon University in the opportunity of interest section to view available volunteer opportunities.
