Gannon University Launches Expansion of Ruskin, Florida Campus

Posted: February 16, 2018Gannon University celebrated the launch of an expansion to its Ruskin, Florida campus in a dedication and groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, Feb. 16. The ceremony recognized the completion of a modernization to existing facilities, as well as unveiled plans of a $21 million project to construct a new academic center and parking lot that will accommodate an anticipated increase in future academic program offerings and the University's growing number of graduate students enrolled in its rehabilitative science programs.

The University first recognized the completion of renovations to its existing facility in a formal dedication ceremony. This modernized space is now equipped with additional student space and offices as enrollment in the campus' occupational therapy, physical therapy and athletic training programs have grown quickly since the campus opened in August 2015.

This was followed by members of the Gannon community breaking ground to signify the initiation of construction for a new exceptional learning environment that will enhance academic opportunities at the Ruskin campus. The three-story, 80,000 square-foot structure will create additional classrooms, laboratories and faculty offices that will be integrated with new amenities, including a fitness center and a common student gathering area.
"This new construction is a symbol of the vitality of the Ruskin campus, and also our commitment to inspiring students and transforming their lives so that they can transform the growing healthcare sector in Florida and beyond," said Steven Mauro, Ph.D., vice president, academic administration. "I can imagine no better place for our students to engage in their education and to seek answers to core questions than our new academic center."

This new academic center will allow for the type of engagement and interaction between students, faculty, community members and partners that will foster collaborative relationships and hands-on opportunities for students to enrich and develop their careers.

"We are excited for the possibilities this campus expansion will bring for our students and the community in Ruskin," said Sarah Ewing, Ph.D., dean of the Morosky College of Health Professions and Sciences. "This new space will allow us to enhance the integration of classroom learning with hands-on application in new lab and fitness facilities. It will provide students the type of practical experience and knowledge to gain a competitive edge in their fields."

Gannon University has long been acknowledged for its strength in the rehabilitative sciences. This expansion builds on that strength by making it possible for the Ruskin campus to quadruple its current enrollment of 117 over the next decade.

This will also provide the University with the opportunity to expand its academic programs at this location and offer education in high-demand disciplines within Florida's rapidly expanding healthcare economy, such as physician assistant and speech and language pathology.

"The reception we have received from students, the healthcare community, and our neighbors and friends in Ruskin has been more than gratifying," said Gannon University President Keith Taylor, Ph.D. "We are proud to be growing along with this expanding region and to be strengthening our commitment to service and accessible, high-quality education for Florida's health professionals."
