Gannon University’s Erie Chamber Orchestra Opens 40th Season with a New Music Director

Posted: September 7, 2017

The 40th anniversary season of the Erie Chamber Orchestra will begin Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, 250 W. Seventh St
with a new music director.

He is Canadian-born Bradley Thachuk, who was chosen following a search last year. Thachuk is the music director of the Niagara Symphony Orchestra. Previously, Thachuk held the position of associate conductor of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and interim music director of the Prince George Symphony Orchestra in British Columbia. He has conducted orchestras and opera in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland, Italy, Portugal and throughout North America.

Thachuk will make his debut as music director conducting a program that will include Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll," Ravel's "Ma Mere l'Oye," (Mother Goose) and "The Muse and the Poet" by Saint-Saëns. The orchestra's concertmaster, Maureen Conlon, and cellist Danielle Cho are the soloists in the latter work.

Camille Pierce, the orchestra's executive director said Thachuk was chosen for "his musicality, certainly, his knowledge of the orchestral repertoire and his personality, too. One of the things he talked about was how much he liked being here and working with the orchestra, and the feeling seemed to be mutual. We're looking forward to a season of great music."

In addition to performances, the orchestra will continue its popular series of instrumental petting zoos at the Barber National Institute and its annual educational concert. Visiting soloists will perform at Springhill Senior Living Community on the Fridays preceding concerts and will be featured on WQLN-FM's Live from Studio Q series. The opening broadcast can be heard Sept. 8 at 12 p.m.

Since its beginning as the Erie Bayfront Orchestra in 1978, the Erie Chamber Orchestra has sustained the vision of its founding music director Bruce Morton Wright of making concert music available to all music lovers free of charge.
