Posted: July 17, 2017

Gannon University is pleased to announce the addition of two members to its board of trustees.

V. James Fiorenzo '90M, recently retired as president of UPMC Hamot, and Timothy G. NeCastro '83, president and chief executive officer of Erie Insurance, will join Gannon's board of trustees, beginning their terms in September.

The new trustees are experienced, executive leaders who represent two of downtown Erie's largest entities. By participating in the governance of a third entity, the two new trustees can work to further strengthen collaborative partnerships, and to align efforts as catalysts for creating and sustaining economic development and community transformation in the downtown and surrounding Erie region.

"Jim Fiorenzo and Tim NeCastro are visionary leaders in the community and good friends of Gannon University," said University President Keith Taylor, Ph.D. "Their leadership and deep sense of dedication to the community will be a valuable asset to this University and to Erie. We are pleased to welcome these distinguished Gannon graduates back to campus as members of our board of trustees."

Gannon University's board of trustees is comprised of accomplished professionals, alumni, religious and community leaders who support and guide initiatives that align with the University's Mission, Catholic Identity and vision. Gannon trustees share a commitment to serving students, the University and the community.

Fiorenzo and NeCastro have each personally demonstrated and led such commitment and service to the community among their companies, by providing health and educational programming, as well as promoting outreach and volunteer efforts within the community. Additionally, both UPMC Hamot and Erie Insurance have recently announced upcoming construction that will significantly benefit the region by creating new employment opportunities and enhancing the delivery of health care in Erie.

This level of service to the community, paired with Gannon's commitment to providing affordable education, economic development initiatives through its Erie Technology Incubator and Small Business Development Center, along with community initiatives through the Erie-Gannon Alliances to Improve Neighborhood Sustainability (Erie-GAINS) and Our West Bayfront organizations, will create unprecedented opportunities for improving and sustaining downtown Erie.

Gannon University looks forward to welcoming Fiorenzo and NeCastro to the board of trustees to help strengthen the commitment of service to the community and to integrate each entities' strategic efforts and vision toward revitalizing Erie.

 V. James Fiorenzo '90M, Retired President of UPMC Hamot

Jim Fiorenzo, who served as president of UPMC Hamot since 2012, has been a driving force in the development of Erie's downtown area, having overseen an investment of more than $150 million in improvements to the hospital's clinical facilities, physical plant, technology and infrastructure, changing the face of the Hamot campus and the Bayfront district. In January 2017, he capped this distinguished career by announcing that he will retire in June 2017, after 42 years of service.

"I am extremely excited to take on this appointment to the Gannon University board of trustees," Fiorenzo said. "My Gannon education was extremely valuable in preparing me for my long career at UPMC Hamot. Becoming a trustee will now give me an opportunity to give back to this great institution in other ways. I look forward to working with my fellow trustees and administration to continue to reshape the vision and mission of Gannon into the future."

Fiorenzo began his career at UPMC Hamot as a staff pharmacist in 1975. Before becoming UPMC Hamot's president, he served as chief operating officer, senior vice president of Strategic and Support Services, president of Regional Health Services, president of Great Lakes Home Health Care Services, Bayside Pharmacy and Physician Supply and associate director of Pharmacy and Drug Information Services. Fiorenzo graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor's degree in pharmacy and earned an MBA from Gannon University in 1990.

In service to his community, Fiorenzo is a member of the boards of the Boys & Girls Club of Erie and the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership.
