Gannon University Competitive Cheer Team Hosts Road To Daytona Showcase This Weekend

Gannon University's competitive cheer team will host the Road to Daytona showcase on Sunday, February 21 at 1 p.m. at the Hammermill Center, 620 Peach St. Doors will open at 12 p.m. and admission is free.

In addition to Gannon's varsity all-girl and co-ed squads, participants will include competitive cheer teams from Our Lady of Peace School, cheer Vibe, and Villa Maria Academy, last year's District 10 small-school champions. Gannon University's dance team will also perform at the showcase, which takes its name from the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) Collegiate Cheer Championships scheduled for April 6-10, 2016 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Gannon University earned a third consecutive bid to the Championships in the program's third year of existence.

Earlier this month The Gannon competitive cheer teams opened the 2016 season with a pair of first-place finishes at the JDRF Cheer for a Cure competition in Niagara Falls, New York. The all-girl squad defeated Brockport State in the college division while the co-ed squad produced a raw score of 88.5 in capturing their division.

"Competitive cheer is a sport that's building momentum in the area," said Gannon head coach Meghan Foran. "We are using this showcase as a sort of 'home game' for teams in the area to come together and perform."
