Gannon University Hosts Agents of Change Conference

Agents of Change ConferencePosted: March 26, 2015

Gannon University will host a conference of the Lake Effect Leaders AmeriCorps*VISTA project of NWPA on March 27 and 28.

The conference, entitled "Agents of Change: Harnessing the Power of Higher Education for Community Change," will address the ways in which higher education institutions are mobilizing intellectual capital to address critical community issues and support positive change.

The conference is inspired by the history and evolution in northwest Pennsylvania that has been facilitated by Allegheny College for the past 11 years. Service teams from the AmeriCorps*VISTA program at participating community sites in Erie and Crawford counties and selected institutions of higher education will showcase projects that have harnessed student leadership to bridge the gap between campus and community to battle poverty and advance social justice.

Programs related to literacy, mentoring, food recovery, communication, design, home repair and others will be discussed as part of the conference, which will also include plenary sessions, workshops to develop the tools needed for strong campus- community partnerships, and design sessions that provide an opportunity to plan projects with the assistance of the conference team.

A keynote presentation will be given at 7:15 p.m. on March 27 by Gregory Crowley, president and CEO of Coro Pittsburgh, a program for professional and community leadership development whose mission is to advance ethical and effective leaders who share a commitment to civic engagement. Additional presentations on March 28 will be given by former AmeriCorps*VISTA members, Annie and Jude Shingle, co-founders of Box of Light Studios, and Erie City Council member Curtis Jones.

The Lake Effect Leaders program is a collaborative effort of Allegheny College, Gannon University, Mercyhurst University and the Nonprofit Partnership. The cost to attend the two-day conference is $35 per participant, which includes dinner and networking reception on March 27, and breakfast and lunch on March 28.
