In 2008, David Smith retired after a 44-year career as an Agent, Senior Underwriter, Product Development Specialist, and Market Intelligence Analyst with the Erie Insurance Group. He is also a retired US Army Military Intelligence Officer who maintained this concurrent career for 24 years.

Mr. Smith held Army qualifiers as both Combat Intelligence Officer and Strategic Intelligence Officer. He was awarded a graduate diploma from the US Army Command and General Staff College in 1990. He was a two-time recipient of the Army Commendation Medal.


After his retirement from Erie Insurance, he became the Director of the Risk Management and Insurance Program at Gannon University. David received a B.A. in Political Science from Gannon College in 1970 and an M.S.M. from the American College of Financial Services in 1995. He received the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation in 1977 and was a founding member of the Presque Isle CPCU Chapter.

In the fall of 2016, The Managers Guide to Terrorism, Risk and Insurance was released by Rothstein and Associates as an E-Book in 2017. This work on Terrorism Risk Management was co-authorized by David Smith and Dr. Mark Silinsky.
