This grant award helped establish the current Villa Maria School of Nursing center at the John E. Horan Garden Apartments. It was established with collaboration between the Erie Housing Authority and Community Health Net.  The grant established the current nursing center because of the growing shift of the nursing program to clinical learning experiences to community based experiences.  The grant assisted the underserved population through screening, case finding, health promotion/education and appropriate referral – ultimately improving the health of the community.

Co-Authored with Sharon Thompson, PhD, RN, MPH

Grantor:  March of Dimes/Northwest Pennsylvania Division

Grantee:  Gannon University’s Villa Maria School of Nursing

Project Name:  Folic Acid Education Campaign:  “Get the B-Attitude”

Grant Period:  November 2001 – December 1, 2001- November 30, 2002

Grand Award:  $14,048

This year-long program stressed the necessity of folic acid supplementation prior to and during pregnancy.  In cooperation with Gannon University, Community Health Net and Erie County Farms, this education campaign encouraged folic acid supplementation to women of childbearing age.

The goals of this educational campaign were in direct accordance with the goals of the national Folic Acid Campaign initiated by the CDC, the March of Dimes, and the National council on Folic Acid – to educate women of reproductive age about the need to consume 400 ucg of the B-vitamin folic acid daily to prevent serious neural tube birth defects, including spina bifida and anencephaly.

Following awarding of the grant, Dr. Thompson and I worked with a graduate student Jane Rowland to carry out the term of the Grant.  We assisted Jane in educational programs at Erie County Farms and various Community Health net sites.
