Program Overview
Whether you are interested in animals and wish to pursue veterinary
medicine or are interested in an in-depth study of the eyes and other parts of the body related to vision through the field of optometry, now is the time
to consider the benefits of pursuing a career in one of these rapidly growing
professional programs. Due to an aging and increasing population, there is a need for an increased number of health professionals to care for an
individual’s overall health and well-being. Often students are driven toward a
career as a physician due to personal experiences and a lack of knowledge of
the role of other healthcare providers. It is important for students to explore
healthcare professions and to consider these options as an excellent career
choice due to the students’ interests, career and personal goals, job outlook
projections, and salary potential upon completion of their terminal degree.
What do professionals in these careers do? Well, did you know some
podiatrists specialize in sports medicine or pediatrics? There are even
advanced surgical podiatrists who spend most of their time performing
advanced surgical procedures. Podiatrists can be found in the offices of
other health practitioners, offices of physicians, federal government and
hospitals. Dentists practice most often as general practitioners who manage
a wide variety of dental needs, while other dentists function as oral and
maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, prosthodontists (replace missing
teeth) or endodontists (perform root canal therapy), although additional
specialties are also possible. Veterinarians are also rather diverse. As a
practicing veterinarian you may be interested in food safety and inspection,
research, equine veterinary medicine, or food animal veterinary medicine.
There are many opportunities through these professional programs and we encourage students to consider and explore them fully to see if one of
them may be a perfect fit for their future career. After choosing a career
path, Gannon University is committed to the students’ ability to successfully
prepare for admission to the professional phase of their education.
