Sept. 2012 - The 2012 ASEE Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship: Dr. Ramakrishnan Sundaram, associate professor, was awarded a 2012 Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship by the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE). Dr. Sundaram conducted research on signal and image processing at one of the United States Air Force (USAF) facilities during the summer of 2012.
August 2012 - The 2012 HASP Payload Integration at CSBF: Dr. Wookwon Lee, associate professor, recently visited NASA Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility from July 29 to Aug. 4, 2012, along with Physics professor Dr. Nick Conklin and an ECE undergraduate student, Aaron Neiman, for integration of Gannon’s experimental payload onto the High Altitude Student Platform . Gannon’s payload was designed by an interdisciplinary team of two faculty members from ECE and the physics department, and ECE undergraduate students to detect arrivals of cosmic rays and collect data during the HASP flight at an altitude of 130,000 ft. in near space.
August 2012 - US DOE-Sponsored Nationwide Consortium of Universities: Dr. Lin Zhao, assistant professor, attended a U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE)-sponsored workshop held in Minneapolis, MN, August 6-7. The ECE department is an active member of the Nationwide Consortium of Universities for revitalization of electric power engineering education by state-of-the-art laboratories sponsored by DOE.
August 2012 - Consortium of Universities for Sustainable Power (CUSP™): The ECE department shared its Opal-RT based Electrical Drives lab activities with all the consortium members in a recent workshop. These lab activities were re-developed at Gannon based on related initial work by Dr. Mohan from University of Minnesota. The ECE department is an active member of CUSP™ funded by various organizations including NSF, Office of Naval Research (ONR), NASA and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).
July 2012 - The 2012 ECE Summer Camp: The ECE department recently organized and successfully completed a 3 and a half-day 2012 Summer Camp program with 13 participants from high schools in the Northwest PA region. The summer camp program was for college-bound high school juniors and seniors and provided various lab-based, hands-on project experiences to the participants. One of the project activities, High-Altitude Balloon Assembly and Launch, appeared on two local TV stations during the 6 o’clock news broadcasts.
July 2012 - World Congress on Intelligent Control and Automation: Dr. Qing Zheng, assistant professor, organized an invited session entitled “Disturbance Rejection: Formulation, Methodology, and Applications,” and presented a paper entitled, “An Energy Saving, Factory-Validated Disturbance Decoupling Control Design for Extrusion Processes” at the 10th World Congress on Intelligent Control and Automation held in Beijing, July 6-8. The paper is co-authored by Dr. Zhiqiang Gao of Cleveland State University.
July 2012 – The MSV’12 and ESA’12 Conferences: Dr. Yong-kyu Jung, assistant professor, presented a paper entitled “Design of a Real-Time Simulator for an Electric Vehicle” in the 2012 International Conference on Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Methods (MSV'12). The paper was co-authored by ECE graduate student, Troy Silloway, Professor Donald MacKellar, and Dr. Fong Mak. Dr. Jung also presented another paper, entitled “Motion Recognition-Based Emergency Alarm System” at the 2012 International Conference on Embedded Systems and Applications (ESA'12).
