Thank you for your interest in Gannon University, a community of motivated students, dynamic faculty, exceptional staff and successful alumni. Before visiting the rest of our website, please allow me to introduce you to this extraordinary institution by sharing plans for its future as well as opportunities that distinguish Gannon from other universities.
The University’s vision for the future includes a four-pronged plan. Gannon’s student success and leadership will be encouraged through classroom integration and experiential education, including expanded study abroad experiences and internships. Faculty excellence and scholarship will be enhanced by an active learning environment that will couple student enthusiasm with faculty knowledge and experience. Gannon’s partnership with downtown Erie neighborhoods, Erie County and the Diocese of Erie will be strengthened and revitalized through the Erie-GAINS initiative, which strives to support our city neighborhood. And the University will maintain a commitment to globalization and focus on responsibilities as a world community.
Throughout this transformation, Gannon will continue to foster a love of students and commitment to the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, which stem from our founder, Archbishop John Mark Gannon. Gannon will also continue to provide holistic and experiential education, enhanced by our downtown, urban location, which provides opportunities for students to engage in Erie’s social, cultural and civic experiences.
While maintaining these traditions, the University strives for continuous improvement. This fall, Gannon is opening a new five-story residence hall that holds 293 beds and the latest amenities and learning technology. Across the street, the new, student-run One Green World Café will offer students a safe, fun, alcohol-free environment.
Gannon’s globalization efforts are in full swing with increased international student enrollment, enhanced cultural events and awareness on campus, new study abroad opportunities in the works and existing programs expanding each year.
The University’s offerings grow with each academic year as demands develop and change. The University offers nearly 100 academic programs in the health professions, engineering, business, education, natural and social sciences, and the humanities, and Gannon recently launched the new Gannon’s Online Degree (GOLD) distance education program.
To support our challenging academic programs, the Student Success Center is offering increased peer tutoring with funding from a five-year, $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The fall 2010 enrollment at Gannon was 4,219 students, with first-year students from 22 states, Washington, D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands and 10 countries. Personal attention for each student is provided with a student-to-faculty ratio of 14:1.
Gannon is distinguished by its Small Business Development Center (SBDC), which assists about 700 local business owners each year, and the Erie Technology Incubator (ETI) at Gannon, which is equipped to house up to 25 advanced technology start-up companies, and is adding jobs to the local economy and providing internships to students.
The University’s high academic standards hold strong in its 18 competitive NCAA Division II men’s and women’s athletic teams. Our 386 intercollegiate student-athletes’ grade point average exceeds University and national averages, and many consistently earn dean’s list recognition.
Gannon students have more than 75 campus clubs and organizations and updated facilities to complement their academic programs. For example, students enrolled in the health professions receive hands-on learning experience in a state-of-the-art Patient Simulation Center.
The 33,000 successful Gannon and Villa Maria alumni residing in every state of the nation and 57 countries and the University’s ranking in U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges 2011” are testaments to the high-quality Gannon experience. I invite you to visit our campus and the rest of our website so that you can see why at Gannon, we Believe… in the possibilities.
